The Jug and Bottle (a brief history)
The Jug and Bottle is a rural off licence 12
miles south of York, 7 miles east of Selby in the North/East
Yorkshire border village of Bubwith. Established in October 1998, the
Jug and Bottle is currently run as a hobby by Chonkie and Maggi
Churchouse, both cask ale fanatics.
We realised that the rural pub was declining,
partly due to the tightening of the drink/driving laws, but that
there was a strong contingent of cask ale consumers, like ourselves,
who were not being catered for. As we owned the, then, empty shop
(last used as an abattoir cum butchers), we applied for an off-sales
licence and converted the shop into a 'real ale' off licence (we've
retained some gorey abattoir fixtures and fittings). The off licence
will never fill the void left by the village 'local', but we
encourage people to linger, air their grievances, swap racing tips,
barter over the price of hay, and start/spread village gossip. The
only thing we can't achieve is the on-trade 'bar stool banter'.
Staying in? Enjoy cask ale? Why not invite some friends round, have a
few pints of Timothy Taylor's Landlord (or any one of our four
draught beers), and imagine you're in your favourite pub (but
remember, don't flick the fag ash on the carpet!).
We quickly realised discerning cask ale drinkers
also demanded superior quality in their wine choice. Over three
hundred quality wines, from all corners of the world are now on
offer. We aim to stock, non-high street, small producer products, and
continue to be one step ahead of the supermarkets. Italy is currently
being promoted - watch this space.

Company Profile
The Jug and Bottle is the trading name of Beyond
the Ale (GB) Limited (Beyond the Ale started as importers and
wholesalers of British beers to Eire, hence taking British ale beyond
the Pale).
The shop is included in the Campaign for Real
Ale's "Good Beer Guide", both in 2000 and 2001 editions.
The business is run by Chonkie and Maggi
Churchouse, with a much-appreciated weekly contribution from Susan
(Lofty) Jones. Chonkie and Maggi are a "husband and wife
team", CAMRA members, and have had previous experience of the
licensed trade.
