Belgium - Trappist Beers
Only six breweries can classify their beers as "Trappist" and five are from Belgium. They are strong, fruity top-fermented ales and are all brewed in the monastery premises. The beers can be dark or golden in colour

Belgium - Abbey Beers
Many abbeys have brewing traditions and license their beers to be brewed by commercial companies. Similar in style to "Trappist" beers in the double (dark and malty) and tripel (highly fermented golden beers) style.

Belgium - Brown Ales
A dark brown style with a distinctive sweet and sour flavour. A Flemish speciality and Liefmans make the defining classic of the style Goudenband, although there are many differing dark beers. Once a year, the Liefmans brewery adds cherries to Goudenband and, after a further period of maturation, Liefmans Kriek results. After bottling, it is matured further and a deliciously smooth, dark and distinctive beer emerges. A raspberry version, Frambozen, is also made, again based on the brown ale but sweeter and more delicate.

Belgium - Red Ales
A deep red burgundy colour with a tart, almost sour, taste makes this one of the world's most unusual beer styles. Aged in oak vats for a couple of years, Rodenbach is the definitive example.

Belgium - Saison Ales
A beer style from the French-speaking Walloon region of Belgium. The beers are refreshing and crisp with a lot of flavour.

Belgium - Strong Golden Ales
Whilst the golden colour of this style suggests they may be lagers, they are complex and strong top-fermented ales. Duvel, the Flemish for the devil, is the most well-known. Deceptive in their strength as all are light in palate.

Belgium - Wheat Beers (Wit/Blanche)
The term "white" is applied because of the pale colour and natural cloudiness. Belgian wheat beers, unlike the German Weissbier, are generally spiced with coriander, cura¸ao and orange peel.

Belgium - Fruit Wheat Beers
An interesting blend of 'Wit bier' with extracts to give a refreshing, light, low-alcohol drink, made by Florisgaarden. Very quirky and unusual.

Belgium - Belgian Ales
Beers of conventional strength. The Belgian equivalent to a German 'Alt' beer or an English Pale Ale. A more traditional everyday drinking beer than many Belgian beers.

Belgium - Regional Speciality Beers
Generally known as "Streekbieren" as so many Belgian beers defy categorisation. They are all top-fermenting ales, but many are so distinctive as to create their own style!

Belgium - Belgian Imported British Ales
The British ales became popular in Belgium during the war. These beers are brewed in Britain and bottled in Belgium as they are thought to be too strong for the home market.

Belgium - Lambic Beers
The most unusual beer style in the world, the beers are made from a mash containing a proportion of wheat where no yeast is added to the wort. Fermentation depends on wild yeasts in the atmosphere. Brewing of "Lambic" is only done in a small area near Brussels, by only a dozen or so brewers. When fruit is added, a further fermentation occurs resulting in a champagne-like beer.
